Privacy, parent control, and COPPA
Banana Flip is designed for parents. We ask for parent consent before collecting personal information from a child, explain what we collect and why, and give you tools to review, export, or delete data.
Who we are
Banana Flip is a research-grade adaptive reading program for K–2 children, operated by the Banana Flip team on Cloudflare infrastructure in the United States. A parent or legal guardian creates the account and authorizes each child profile.
Notice to parents under COPPA
Banana Flip is directed to children under 13. We collect personal information from a child only after a parent or legal guardian creates the account, completes the in-app COPPA consent step, and adds the child to their household.
What data we collect
From the parent: email address, display name you supply, and a timestamped consent record (including IP address at consent).
From each child: first name, date of birth, grade, your observations, activity responses (accuracy, latency, words read), and short audio recordings of practice attempts.
Operational data: server requests and minimal error logs to operate the service. We do not sell or share personal information for advertising.
Consent and audio
Audio is collected only during practice activities when the microphone is active for your child's turn — not ambient always-listening recording. Clips are encrypted, used to score activities and show progress, and deleted on a schedule (most within 30 days). You can export or delete data from your parent account.
Parent rights
- Review and export all data we hold (Account → Your data → Download my data).
- Delete your account and request permanent removal of associated child data.
- Refuse further collection by deleting the account (the service requires certain data to operate while subscribed).
Retention and deletion
Account deletion is immediate in the app; a scheduled job permanently removes rows and audio within 30 days. Marketing waitlist emails are separate from child data — unsubscribe anytime.
